An unforgettable adventure for photographers

Picture yourself in a land where the day never ends, the sun never sets; and the sky is alight with vibrant shades of red and orange.

Our Chasing the Light ‘Midnight Sun’ expedition is a bucket list trip for travellers with an insatiable appetite for discovery and a love of nature. Throughout the week, we’ll travel to many wondrous locations; hike breathtaking mountain trails, traverse beautiful coastlines, discover Norse history and be seduced by the spectacular midnight sun.

A world-class experience, you’ll depart this seven-night tour with an impressive collection of images, wonderful memories and many new friends.

The magic of the never ending day

The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that is only observed in latitudes north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle during the summer months when the Earth’s axis tilts towards the sun.

At the Summer solstice, the sun never falls below the Earth’s horizon, ‘Golden Hour’ can last for six hours and today’s magical sunset effortlessly transitions into tomorrow’s golden sunrise. With no time constraints, Vesterålen is one of the prime locations in the World to enjoy the dramatic polar night.

Extraordinary wildlife

Northern Norway is one of the most varied wildlife watching destinations in Europe. Moose, reindeer and Arctic foxes roam freely. The rich waters found around the Norwegian coast also offer possibilities for minke, pilot, humpback & sperm whales, orca, countless seals and majestic birds of prey.

Planned photo excursions are; a puffin safari, a visit to a traditional Sami reindeer farm and a boating wildlife fjord safari viewing cormorants, gannets, terns and Europe’s biggest raptor the white-tailed sea eagle hunting and taking fish from the water.

Travel with Professionals

The difference between a good trip and a great trip can often be the trip leaders. Expedition leaders, photo pro Terry Steeley and full-time aurora chaser Chris Nation are committed to delivering an unforgettable experience. Friendly, energetic, passionate, entertaining, knowledgeable, engaging, interactive and flexible are just a handful of the qualities Terry and Chris bring to the Chasing the Light Photography Expeditions, and past guests tend to agree.

Puffin safari

Each year approximately 80,000 pairs of puffins return to the North West coast of Norway to breed. Easily identifiable by their plump white breast and colourful beak, puffins are arguably one of the prettiest seabirds. With the puffins in residence from April to August, our Summer Solstice trip is the perfect time to visit them; whilst also taking in some of the hidden gems of Andøya.

Wildlife fjord safari

The incredibly photogenic white-tailed sea eagles are an absolute highlight of this trip. Climb aboard the generous sized RIB and cruise around the islands searching for the white-tailed sea eagle, cormorants, gannets, terns and seals. Be prepared and keep your cameras close to hand, the sea eagles come very close as they search for a bite to eat and are a treat to photograph. Expert guidance will be available before boarding the boat to ensure that you maximise the photo opportunities from our safari.

The view from the harbour is always incredibly impressive and there’ll be sufficient time for photos before and after our trip.

Sami Culture & Reindeer shoot

For 5000 years, Arctic Norway has been home to the indigenous Sami people and their reindeer herds. Journey with us as we discover their ancient culture, listen to their stories and hear their songs. You’ll experience a traditional Sami lunch and enjoy time photographing the wild reindeer.

Trail hiking

Weather permitting we will take the opportunity to explore and photograph some of the incredible mountain views that Vesterålen and Lofoten have to offer. Both regions have many hiking trails that we can choose from and all of them are of easy to moderate walks.

Accommodation & Food

We will be staying in shared accommodation in a private house on a scenic fjord in Vesterålen. A mix of single and double/twin bedrooms will be used.

Breakfast and evening meals are included. Breakfast will be self-service. Cooked evening meals will be served in our accommodation. You will have the opportunity to buy lunches each day during the trip.

Base of operations for our ‘Midnight Sun’ Arctic photography workshop will be Vesterålen, 230km inside the Arctic Circle. This site has been selected as it provides the best opportunity to visit numerous locations in the shortest amount of time. We will have access to both coastal and inland areas and the upper-hand against constantly changing weather conditions.

A few of the places we intend to visit:

This rugged and gorgeous weathered island stretches far North, and presents beautiful scenes of both the spectacular landscape and the local wildlife, ranging from sea eagles and whales to reindeer and moose. The island is ideal for a circular tour, allowing us to see imposing lighthouses, one of the longest beaches in Norway, Andøya Rocket Range, a rocky peninsula that just begs for a camera to be pointed at it and some amazing old buildings.

Langøya & Nyksund

The twists and turns on the road to Nyksund are amongst some of the most interesting we’ll travel during our week. Boasting photo opportunities on almost every kink, the journey offers dramatic coastline views and interesting buildings along the route. Almost entirely deserted during the winter months, Nyksund is a charming fishing village perched on the far west coast. It’s an ideal place for some great ghost-town photos as well as being a great location to capture the forces of nature as waves crash against the rocks on the harbour perimeter.

Gullesfjord & Kvæfjord

This photography journey travels along the coast road of Gullesfjord followed by a short ferry journey across the fjord then a journey alongside the frozen strawberry fields of the island of Kvæøya. Reaching the tip of Kvæøya we will walk a short distance to the rocky beaches to take in the panoramic view across the fjord. Depending on the weather conditions, a campfire lunch by the water’s edge is planned here too.

Lofoten Islands

In trip(s) to Lofoten we will visit diverse landscapes which may include Henningsvær, Haukland, Utakleiv & Gimsøya. These destinations are considered some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, majestic mountains, deep fjords, squawking seabird colonies and long, surf-swept beaches. Lofoten’s beauty is simply staggering.
